The Faculty of Arts and Science, as the youngest of the eight faculties within the Uludağ University, was established in 1983. At the beginning, there were four departments: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. In 1989, six more departments, Philosophy, Sociology, History, Turkish Language and Literature, Art History and Psychology were added to these four departments.
The first four departments are situated at the main campus, while the others are temporarily at a remote campus called Sonmez campus, in the city center, 20 kilometers away from the main campus. There are about 3.500 undergraduate students, 180 academic and 44 administrative staff in total.
Although the intensive workload of academic staff, the Faculty has the second place after the Faculty of Medicine, within the eighth faculties, according to the number of ongoing projects and publications.
As a result of high number of student population, students, after completing their secondary education, have to take a nationwide entrance exam called OSS, and the successful ones get the chance of having higher education according to the result obtained in this exam. Undergraduate degree is four years in all departments. There is an exam for those who wish to do research and to become academician. For those graduates, the MSc or MA degree is two years and the following PhD degree is four years.
Graduates of all departments can obtain the chance of becoming a secondary school teacher upon completion of special training courses. Apart from this, they work in a wide range of choices such as banks, finance, governmental and educational bodies, private sector, health sector, depending on the department they have completed.
